Self-realization is a simple discovery.
I’d been involved in a number of spiritual programs and paths. You start the first class, spastic with excitement to attain spiritual enlightenment. The teachers help you settle in by helping you sit quietly. When you sit quietly, they tell you, a feeling of peace will naturally arise. After this brief instruction, the training program will begin.
The insight I had was so powerful and simple, it actually made me laugh.
I realized I’d already received the entire instruction! I’d also attained the state that is supposed to be so far away. Enlightenment is already here. That’s why we say it’s within, innate, private, invisible, a personal choice. If you put your hand on a hot stove, it doesn’t take a lifetime to take it off.
The peace that arises when you stop bothering yourself, where did it come from?
It came from the inside – it’s innate. You don’t have to look for it. When you try to find it, you seem to lose it. (It’s like getting up from your chair to look for your chair!)
This feeling is the door. It is indeed your direct connection to truth, reality, God. All guidance, wisdom, solace – everything you need is within. The idea that you’re separate from it is only a thought. You can stop believing this thought and go home anytime. You don’t have to wait for anything more.
You are what “you” just emerged from. You need only return to the stillness you are.
